Paint by Numbers for Nursing Homes and Assisted Living: Running a Group Session

Paint by numbers works well as a group activity in a nursing home or assisted living residence because every resident gets a printed guide on the canvas, so nobody has to know how to draw. The staff job is mostly preparation: pick kits with large, clear zones, set up one table station per person, and plan for several short sessions instead of one long one.

Why It Fits a Group Setting

A kit is self-contained. Each one comes as a pre-printed canvas with numbered paints and brushes, so a session needs a table, water and some paper towels, and little else. Residents work at their own speed on their own canvas, which means a faster painter is not waiting for a slower one, and nobody has to compare. The activity also suits mixed groups: a resident who paints every day and one who is trying it for the first time can sit at the same table with different kits.

Choosing Kits for the Group

  • Large zones over fine detail. Open areas of sky, water or petals are easier on tired eyes and unsteady hands than a canvas full of tiny numbered pockets. Our beginner friendly collection is the place to start.
  • A bigger canvas, not a smaller one. Numbers are easier to read when they are printed larger. Our large paint by numbers kits come on 50x65 cm and 60x60 cm canvases.
  • Subjects people recognize. Gardens, birds, boats, barns, flowers. A familiar subject starts a conversation at the table, which is half of the point of a group session.
  • Let people choose. Lay out three or four kit images and let each resident pick. Someone who chose their own picture is more likely to come back to it next week.

Setting Up the Table

  1. Give each resident a clean place mat or a sheet of paper under the canvas, a cup of water, a few paper towels and their own brushes.
  2. Open only the paint pots needed for the first zone. A full set of pots in front of a new painter is a lot to take in.
  3. Good lighting matters more than anything else on this list. A lamp on the table or a seat by a window makes the numbers easy to read.
  4. Keep a spare brush and a damp cloth within reach of the table, because paint on a sleeve or a dropped brush will happen.

How Long a Session Runs

Plan on short blocks, about 30 to 45 minutes, and keep the canvases on a shelf or a rolling cart between sessions. Painting a kit takes many hours in total, so it is a project that continues over weeks, not an afternoon craft. Starting a session by looking at last week's progress gives residents a place to pick up. Our guide on how long a kit takes to complete has typical ranges.

Kits to look at first

Beginner friendly kits for easy first sessions, large format kits for readable numbers, and gift kits if a family member wants to bring one in for a resident.

Looking After the Paint

  • Close each pot firmly after use. Acrylic dries out quickly when a lid is left loose. If it happens, our guide to fixing dried out paint explains what to do.
  • Rinse brushes in water at the end of every session and lay them flat to dry.
  • Label each canvas with the painter's name on the back or on a sticky note, so the right one lands on the right table.

Showing the Finished Canvases

A finished canvas is a good reason for a small display in a corridor or common room, and for a short moment where each painter says what they painted. Our guide to displaying finished paint by numbers has ideas that work without drilling into a wall.
