Wild herds on the prairie, a black stallion in a golden meadow, a chestnut horse among wildflowers, a pinto in red canyon country, a mare with her foal. These kits are for people who like to paint movement and weight, and who want the result on a wall.

A horse is a good subject for numbered painting because the coat is a large area where color changes slowly. That is where the number of colors matters most. With 24 colors the coat is painted in a few broad zones and the kit goes quickly. With 36 or 48 colors the highlights on the shoulder, the dark muscle lines and the strands of the mane get their own zones, and the horse looks rounder. Black and dark brown horses are a good test of patience: the shading is in the small steps between darks, so work in daylight.

Try Wild Horses on the Golden Prairie for a herd in motion, Black Stallion in the Golden Meadow for strong contrast, or Tender Bond: Mother and Foal for a quieter scene. For winter, there is a horse-drawn sleigh at sunset.

Every kit comes in five sizes, from 12x12 in to 23.5x23.5 in, with 16x20 in as the recommended one. New to this? Start from our beginner friendly kits, or see the full range of paint by numbers kits for adults and more animal designs.
