The photo is the hard part
A dog that sees a phone pointed at it tends to walk toward the phone. Hold a treat just above the lens: the dog looks into the camera and the ears come up. Use burst mode and keep the sharpest frame, the one where the eyes are crisp.
Outdoors, open shade works best, under a tree or along the shady side of a building. Direct sun makes the dog squint and throws hard shadows that the generator turns into dark patches across the face.
Coats that need more colors, and coats that need fewer
Black labradors, pugs, black and tan breeds: a dark face swallows the eyes and the line of the mouth. Set 36 or 48 colors with Fine detail, and take the photo in daylight so the coat shows its brown and grey highlights.
Curly coats, like poodles, doodles and bichons, are made of thousands of tiny light and dark spots. Relaxed detail groups them into larger areas that still read as curls. Fine gives a lot of very small areas, slow to paint.
A short coat of one color, a fawn boxer or a yellow lab, looks right at 24 colors.
Tongue, nose and collar
The pink tongue and the wet black nose are often the brightest and darkest spots of the whole picture, so each tends to get its own number. A red collar or a bright harness takes a color too. Take it off before the photo if you would rather not paint it.
Two dogs side by side work, as long as both faces are large in the frame. Two dogs far apart in a garden turn into two small shapes with almost no face.
