A paint by numbers kit made from a photo you choose: their dog asleep on the couch, the house they grew up in, the beach from the honeymoon. We turn the photo into a numbered canvas, mix the acrylics to match it and pack the brushes. They open it on Christmas morning and spend the next few weekends painting it.

Which photo makes the best gift

• A pet. One animal, close to the camera, eyes in focus. Fur reads well at 36 or 48 colors. There is a pet portrait kit set up for this.
• A couple or a wedding. Both faces near the lens. A wide shot in front of the venue leaves too few numbers for the faces.
• A place. The family house, a cabin, a city they moved away from. A clear subject and a sky that isn't blown out.

Group photos where every face is small, night shots and pictures forwarded through messaging apps tend to disappoint. The product page checks size and compression when you upload, and the photo guide covers lighting and framing.

Sizes, and why we'd go one up for a gift

The number of colors stays the same whatever the canvas, only the surface grows. On a bigger canvas each numbered area is bigger, so eyes, whiskers and lettering stay easy to paint, and the finished piece holds a wall instead of leaning on a shelf.

The two large sizes need a photo of at least 2500 pixels on the long side. Most phone photos from the last few years pass; screenshots and pictures saved from social media usually don't.

The DIY Frame Kit is a set of wooden bars you assemble around the finished canvas. No glass, no trip to the framer: once the paint is dry it goes on a nail. The canvas ships rolled and unframed either way, which is how you want it while painting.

Prices show in your currency on the product page and change with size, number of colors and frame. Pick 24 colors for bold, simple photos and 36 or 48 for faces and fur.

If the kit doesn't look like the photo

When the photo check showed "Good to print" and the kit you receive doesn't match the photo, we reprint it at our cost and you keep the first one. Email us within 30 days of delivery with the order number, the original photo and a picture of the kit. One reprint per order, details in the refund policy.

Buying for more than one person

Our ready-made kits for adults are three for the price of two: put three in the cart and the cheapest one is free. Most of the Christmas kits are included, the cart shows it before you pay. Custom photo kits aren't part of that offer. More ideas in the gift kits.

Can I see the result before I order? Yes. The free generator shows the outline and painted preview from your photo in the browser. The photo isn't sent to our servers.

Do they need to know how to paint? No. Every area has a number, every pot has the same number. No drawing.

I'm outside the US. Shipping is also free to Canada, the UK, the EU, Australia and New Zealand. Delivery times are longer than to the US, so order earlier than November 29.
