New parents are given a lot of objects. Most of them are for the baby and most of them are outgrown inside a year. A painted canvas is for the parents, and it does not get outgrown, which is most of the reason this particular gift lands the way it does.
Which photograph works
Baby photographs are harder to convert than adult ones, and the reasons are specific. A newborn face has almost no contrast in it: soft light, small features, skin tones that sit within a narrow band. Tracing that into numbered regions can produce a canvas that looks like a pale oval.
What gets round it:
- Window light from the side, not overhead and not flash. Side light builds the shadow that separates a cheek from a jaw.
- Fill the frame with the head and shoulders. If the cot is in the picture, crop it out before uploading.
- Eyes open and in focus. A sleeping baby is a lovely photograph and a flat painting, because the eyes are where the darkest region on the canvas would otherwise be.
- Something with colour in it. A hand on a blue blanket, a knitted hat, anything that is not more skin tone.

Size and colour count, and why they matter more here
For a baby face, do not economise. Take 20x26 inches at $29.95 and 48 colours. At 24 colours a face gets three tones of skin and reads as a poster, which is fine for a canyon and not fine for a child. The 12x12 at $19.95 is the wrong canvas for this job even though it is the cheapest.

Not every parent wants their child on the wall, and the nursery itself still needs something. Five canvases in the nursery collection that suit the room:

The format survives that better than most hobbies: acrylic dries in fifteen minutes, the canvas can sit untouched for two weeks, and a single colour finished in twenty minutes is real progress. Work one colour at a time across the whole canvas rather than finishing an area, and you can stop at any point without leaving a half painted face.
