25 Easy Things to Paint on Canvas (Even If You Can’t Draw)

The hardest brushstroke is the first one, mostly because nobody tells you what to paint. The trick is not talent, it is picking a subject made of big simple shapes and few colors. Everything on this list qualifies, and everything works in acrylics, which dry in minutes and cover their own mistakes: if a shape goes wrong, wait ten minutes and paint over it.

Want the drawing done for you? These kits arrive with the canvas already mapped out:

Turn one of your own photos into a numbered canvas (from $19.95). We trace it, mix the paints to match, and ship the kit with brushes.

Easy Things to Paint on Canvas

These ten subjects forgive wobbly lines. Most need four or five colors.

  • 1. A banded sunset. Horizontal stripes of yellow, orange, pink and violet, blended where they meet. No drawing at all, and it teaches you blending on the first try.
  • 2. A mountain silhouette at dusk. Paint the sunset first, let it dry, then one jagged dark shape across the bottom third.
  • 3. A full moon over water. One pale circle, a dark sea, and short horizontal dashes of the moon color below it for the reflection.
  • 4. A cactus in a terracotta pot. Green oval, a few lighter stripes, white dots for spines. A lemon-yellow background makes it look deliberate.
  • 5. One tree in an empty field. The classic for a reason: ground line, trunk, a cloud of leaves dabbed on with a sponge.
  • 6. The ocean horizon. Two blues meeting at a straight line, white foam dragged on with a dry brush. Painter’s tape keeps the horizon honest.
  • 7. A hot air balloon. A circle, a tiny basket, two lines between them, sky behind. Stripes on the balloon if you feel brave.
  • 8. Cherries or a lemon on a plain background. Small fruit, huge background. A single lemon on deep blue looks better than it has any right to.
  • 9. A night sky full of stars. Dark blue-to-black canvas, then flick a loaded toothbrush over it. Messy, fast, always works.
  • 10. A striped mug of coffee. Cylinder, handle, steam squiggle. Kitchen walls eat these up.

Acrylic Painting Ideas With a Bit More Going On

Still simple shapes underneath, just more of them.

  • 11. A birch forest. Lay strips of painter’s tape, paint the background, peel the tape, add black bark marks on the white trunks left behind.
  • 12. A wildflower meadow. Green washes, then dots of red, yellow and white from the tip of the handle, not the brush. Denser at the bottom, sparser near the top.
  • 13. A rainy window. Blurry blobs of color for the world outside, dried, then thin gray trails running down the canvas.
  • 14. Koi in dark water. Two orange-and-white shapes like apostrophes, ripples around them, that is the whole painting.
  • 15. Abstract color blocks. Tape off rectangles and fill them from one family of neighboring hues. Our guide to analogous colors explains why three neighbors on the color wheel never clash.
  • 16. A sailboat far away. Sea, sky, and one small white triangle. The emptiness is the point.

Seasonal Ideas Worth Saving

  • 17. Hearts in a mason jar for Valentine’s Day. Draw the jar around a drinking glass, fill it with red and pink hearts, write a date on the lid.
  • 18. Two birds on a wire, also a Valentine favorite, and just two round shapes on one line.
  • 19. A cardinal on a snowy branch. Red bird, white ground, gray sky. The highest-impact Christmas subject per minute of effort.
  • 20. A snowman under a night sky, three circles and a carrot, plus the toothbrush-star trick from idea 9.
  • 21. A jack-o’-lantern on a porch step. Orange sphere, black triangles, a warm glow dabbed around the carved face. More Halloween scenes, already numbered, live in the Halloween collection.

Stuff to Paint That Is Not a Canvas

Acrylics stick to most surfaces around the house.

  • 22. Coasters. Cork or ceramic, one bold motif each: a lime slice, a wave, a monstera leaf. Seal them with two coats of water-based varnish or the first hot mug ruins the set.
  • 23. Rocks. Smooth river stones painted as ladybugs, cacti or tiny houses. Good with kids, weirdly calming without them.
  • 24. Terracotta pots. Prime with white first or the clay drinks the color. Simple patterns beat tiny details here.
  • 25. Glass jars. Paint the outside with dots or stripes, drop a tea light inside once it dries.

When You Want the Drawing Done For You

Every idea above still asks you to sketch a shape or two. A paint by numbers kit removes that step: the canvas arrives with the whole design mapped into numbered cells, the paints come pre-mixed, and you fill the picture in like a crossword. Designs run from Van Gogh and Monet reproductions to the landscapes and animals in the full adults collection. If it is your first kit, pick the 24-color version of any design: fewer colors means larger areas and a finished painting sooner.

No experience needed. Money-back guarantee.
