How to Layer Paint in Paint by Numbers for Better Coverage

How to Layer Paint in Paint by Numbers for Better Coverage

Ever notice some sections look thin or streaky after one coat? Layering paint is the technique that transforms good coverage into perfect coverage, making your finished painting look smooth, vibrant, and professional.

At ArtistryByNumbers, our premium paints are formulated for excellent coverage in 1-2 coats. Free Shipping (US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia) and Buy 2 Get 1 Free.

Want to paint this yourself?

Turn one of your own photos into a numbered canvas (from $19.95). We trace it, mix the paints to match, and ship the kit with brushes.

Or pick a ready-made design

When to Layer

  • Light over dark: light yellow over a dark area needs 2-3 coats
  • Thin coverage: if the numbers show through after the first coat
  • Correcting mistakes: painting the correct color over a wrong one
  • White sections: white paint is the most translucent; always needs 2 coats

How to Layer Properly

  1. First coat: thin and even: do not try to cover everything in one thick coat
  2. Wait for complete drying: 10-15 minutes minimum between coats
  3. Second coat: perpendicular direction: if first coat went left-right, second goes up-down
  4. Third coat (if needed): lightest touch: barely loaded brush, gentle strokes

Common Layering Mistakes

  • Painting before the first coat dries: this lifts and smears the underlying paint
  • Too thick: thick coats crack and look lumpy; thin coats build smoothly
  • Wrong direction: same-direction coats create visible brush lines

No experience needed: layering is simple once you know the rules. Money-back guarantee.
