Finding the right photo
The photo you love most is not always the one that paints best. A blurry picture of the last walk together carries more memory than a sharp one from years ago, but the generator only sees pixels. Go through a few candidates here before ordering: the preview shows in seconds what each one becomes.
Look for the original file first. Photos sent through WhatsApp or Messenger lose most of their detail on the way, and screenshots are worse. Check the phone gallery, an old phone, Google Photos or iCloud, and the camera roll of whoever took the picture.
If the only copy is a paper print, lay it flat near a window, switch off the flash and photograph it from straight above. Tilt the print slightly if the light leaves a shine across the face.
When the photo is small or old
The generator shows the size of the photo as soon as you choose it. Under 900 px on the long side, a home printout still works, a canvas less so. Pick the smaller canvas, 30 × 30 cm, and 24 colors: fewer, larger areas hide what a small file cannot hold.
Photos from older phones often have a yellow or blue cast. The colors of the kit follow the photo, so a cream dog in a yellow photo becomes a yellow dog. If you have the choice, take the picture shot outdoors in daylight.

What makes it look like them
The eyes, then the markings. A white patch over one eye, a torn ear, a grey muzzle: these details are what friends and family recognise, and they need enough colors to survive. For a pet with a patterned coat, 36 colors is the safer choice; 48 if the photo is sharp and the face is large.
Crop around the head and shoulders rather than the whole body. The painting will be the same size either way, and the face gets more of it.
Painting it, or giving it
Some people paint the portrait themselves, slowly, a few areas each evening. Others order it for a friend who has just lost a dog or a cat, so the kit is there when they are ready to sit down with it. Either way, nothing is rushed: the numbers stay printed on the canvas until the last area is painted.
