Description

How does a custom paint by numbers kit work?

You upload a photo on this page, pick a canvas size and 24, 36 or 48 colors, and we print the picture as a numbered canvas. It ships with acrylic paints matched to those numbers, brushes and a print of your photo. You fill each numbered area with its color until the photo becomes your own painting.

What photo should I choose for a custom painting?

A sharp photo taken in daylight, one clear subject, at least 1500 pixels on the short side (2500 for the 20"x26"). Screenshots and pictures saved from social media are usually too small. When you pick the file, the page checks it on the spot and shows a preview of the painted result, so a weak photo shows up before you pay. The photo guide has examples, and the canvas size guide helps with the format.

How long does a custom kit take to arrive?

Orders leave our workshop within 1-3 business days and arrive in about 7-15 business days to the US, Europe and Asia, with a tracking number. Painting takes most people two or three weekends, depending on the size and the number of colors.

Can I use a drawing instead of a photo?

Yes. Anime, line art, a game still or a watercolor you painted are already made of flat color blocks, so 24 colors can be enough where a pet portrait needs 36. Send at least 1000 px on the short side, and only art you own or paid for. More in the custom paint by numbers guide.

Custom paint by numbers, built from your own picture: your dog, the wedding shot, the house you grew up in.

Picking a size and a color count

12"x12" square: the smallest kit, from $19.95 with 24 colors.
12"x16": a good first project. Finishes faster and fits a standard frame.
16"x20": the size most people choose, room for detail without taking every evening.
20"x26" or the 23.5" jumbo square: a statement piece. Needs a photo of 2500 px or more.

24 colors suits landscapes and bold, simple images. Faces, pets and groups need 36 or 48 for the shading. The exact price for your size and color count is shown above, in your currency.

A print of your own photo to paint from
Step-by-step instructions

How your custom kit is made

Pick your size and how many colors you want.
Upload the photo here on this page, the kit will not go into the cart without a file. (If the image is enormous or the upload stalls, mail it to info@artistrybynumbers.com with your order number.)
We open the file before anything is printed. Too small, too dark, wrong shape: we write back and ask for another one rather than send you a canvas you will not like.
Once the photo passes, we convert it into a numbered canvas, match the paints and ship it.

Two things spoil more canvases than resolution. Light: a photo taken in a car, at night or under yellow bulbs gives the paints a color cast, and the fur or skin comes out the wrong shade. Shape: a landscape photo on a portrait canvas loses a third of the picture, so match the orientation to the size and leave a little room around the subject.

If something goes wrong

Delivery we measured, not just promised: of the 46 orders placed between August 14 and September 14, 2026, half arrived within 11.9 days of the order and 40 within 15 days.
Doesn't look like your photo: if the photo check said "Good to print", we reprint the kit at our cost. Nothing to send back. One reprint per order.
Wrong colors or unusable outlines: send a photo within 30 days of delivery and we reprint it, or refund it if you prefer.
Damaged in transit: tell us within 7 days of delivery, with a photo, and we replace it or refund it.
A person reads info@artistrybynumbers.com, usually within one business day.

The full rules are in the refund policy.

Questions we get asked

How many paint colors come with this kit?
That is your choice in the options: 24, 36 or 48 numbered acrylic pots. Fewer colors gives larger sections and a faster paint. More colors gives finer shading.

What kind of paint is used in a paint by number kit?
Acrylic, water based. It dries in a few minutes, rinses out of the brushes with water, and covers the printed number underneath once dry.

Does the canvas arrive framed?
No. The canvas ships unframed, which is how you want it while you paint. If you want it mounted afterwards, add the DIY Frame Kit option: wooden bars you assemble yourself around the finished piece.

My acrylic looks streaky. What went wrong?
Most likely nothing. Acrylic thins out as you spread it, so one pass over a dark printed number often shows through. Give that first pass a few minutes to dry and go over it again. Two thin coats cover better than one heavy one.

How Many Colors Should I Choose?

You can pick how many colors you want in your kit. The more colors, the more detail.

Four-panel comparison of the same photo of a woman holding a cat rendered as a paint by numbers preview in 24, 36, and 48 colors, next to the original photo, showing how detail increases with more colors

24 colors provides basic detail and is great for beginners. 48 colors is nearly lifelike but could take a long time. 36 colors provides a happy medium, enough detail and not too too long finish.

What is Painting by Numbers?

What does paint by numbers mean?

Taken literally, it is a way of painting a picture without drawing it. The canvas comes printed with outlined areas, every area carries a number, and every number matches a pot of paint. You open pot 7, fill every area marked 7, close it, and move on. Nothing has to be drawn, measured or mixed, which is why a first canvas works exactly like a twentieth.

The phrase also has a figurative meaning in English. Saying that something was done "by the numbers" or "paint by numbers" means it followed a formula step by step, with little room for personal choice: a paint-by-numbers thriller, a paint-by-numbers campaign. The expression comes straight from the hobby kits of the 1950s.

Where it came from

The kits were developed in Detroit at the Palmer Paint Company. Its owner, Max Klein, had asked a commercial artist, Dan Robbins, for a children's coloring product. Robbins came back with a numbered painting, borrowing the idea from the way Renaissance workshops had apprentices fill in numbered patterns. Palmer sold the kits under the Craft Master name from the early 1950s, and they turned into one of the decade's best-selling hobbies, with sales counted in the millions of kits. In 2001 the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History gave the craze its own exhibition, Paint by Number: Accounting for Taste in the 1950s. Robbins died in 2019 at 93.

What you get in a kit

A printed canvas. Ours come in five sizes, from 12"x12" (30x30 cm) to 23.5"x23.5" (60x60 cm), unframed or with a DIY frame kit.
Numbered acrylic pots, already mixed. Every design is offered with 24, 36 or 48 colors: 24 for large, easy areas, 48 for fine detail.
Brushes in several sizes, so the small areas stay clean.

A free printable sheet is a good way to see whether you enjoy it before buying anything.

Why people paint by numbers

An hour without a screen. Most people paint in the evening, one section at a time, and stop when they feel like stopping. The canvas waits.
Your own photo. Send us a picture and we turn it into a numbered canvas: a dog, a house, a wedding shot. Custom kits are here, and the free generator shows what your photo would look like first.
A large choice of designs. We counted more than 670 in our catalogue in October 2026. The largest groups are landscapes, flowers, animals, ocean scenes and space, with cities, abstracts and portraits behind them.

It turned out really well; there were defects in the form of white glare in the actual photo, but I managed to correct the dark skin, although I couldn't fix the wet T-shirt. but still, the result is great. Delivery was scheduled for a month, but everything arrived in 2 weeks. There are more colors than stated, and I had enough paint from the cap, so in the end all the paints are full. I'm satisfied, thank you!

The first painting by numbers I've ordered, and I must say I've been delighted with it. The seller was very attentive, responded to my questions quickly, and once the order was placed, they shipped it very quickly. It surprised me in a good way, very good quality and very well packaged. The canvas comes rolled in a foam tube that prevents it from getting wrinkled, it is of high quality, and the drawing has soft colors that help distinguish and prevent confusion. It includes the 48 colors I selected with a double set, and two sets of brushes, each with 3 brushes, as well as stickers to number them and a photo of how it will look and a photocopy of the drawing on paper with the numbers. I was surprised and delighted, many thanks to the seller, whom I of course recommend. I won't take long to order from your store again; your price is also more affordable than that of other sellers. I'm looking forward to starting it. 🫶🏻

The order arrived in 10 days, I am very satisfied, the quality is good, the seller responds quickly and offers options. My drawing is not in canvas format, I did this on purpose, thank you to the seller for taking into account all my wishes, such as not having the picture cut off, and for offering several printing options. Good service and quality.

The delivery took a little over 2 weeks, everything arrived intact and well-packaged. The artist is very nice, explains everything and suggests what's best to do, helps and advises. The paints are good, 2 packs of brushes were enough, just order the frame separately, because I thought from the reviews that they were included in the set, but they weren't. I recommend it.

The canvas is thick, with good number printing. The paints cover the print with a single stroke. 6 brushes included. Additionally, there is a chart with numbers and photos explaining which numbers correspond to which paint pots. There is a sticker on adhesive tape for sticking onto the pots. The paints are placed in a stand. The canvas is rolled onto a cylinder, arriving flat without any creases. Delivery takes 7 days to Krasnodar. Premium set with fast delivery. Thank you.

I ordered a painting from this seller for the first time using a photo, and to say that I don't have it would be an understatement. The design is simply gorgeous, everything is clearly visible, and I especially liked that the design was in color. Thank you so much for this beauty. If I have more ideas, I'll order again 😁😁😁

looks cool! but I definitely missed the size and number of colors... this will be my first experience. some of the details are really tiny. so far it feels like I'll be painting until I'm old)))
Customer

The paintings are simply amazing)) The quality is excellent, the colors are fresh! Everything was packed perfectly. I am very satisfied, I will order again! Many thanks to the seller ❤️
Customer
★★★★★
I'm simply delighted! I changed the design several times until I was completely sure, the seller helped me choose and generated the artwork several times. The artwork itself is printed very well, high-quality canvas, clear lines, and color distinction. Two sets of brushes seem to be wooden and made of natural bristles. The paints are well packaged in a special tray for them. I haven't opened the paints yet, but I'm sure they are good. In general, a fantastic product for this price.
