Best Paint by Numbers Landscape Kits: Mountains, Oceans, and Fields

Best Paint by Numbers Landscape Kits: Mountains, Oceans, and Fields

Landscape paint by numbers kits are the safest first canvas there is. A mountain, a beach or a field forgives an uneven edge in a way a face never does, and the finished painting goes on any wall in the house. Our landscape collection holds more than 150 designs, from alpine lakes to harbor mornings.

Want to paint this yourself?

Turn one of your own photos into a numbered canvas (from $19.95). We trace it, mix the paints to match, and ship the kit with brushes.

Or pick a ready-made design

Mountain landscapes

Snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, misty valleys and autumn mountain roads. The appeal of a mountain kit is distance: the far ridges are numbered in paler, cooler tones than the near ones, and that is what makes the range look miles deep once it is painted. Rocky Mountains Lake Reflection is a good example, with the peaks repeated upside down in the water. For national parks and western scenery, see American Landscapes.

Ocean and beach scenes

Sunset beaches, breaking waves, tropical shores and calm harbor mornings. Water and sky share most of the palette, which keeps these kits calm to look at and quick to paint. Sunset Pier is one of the simplest to start with. Our guide to ocean and beach kits goes through the rest, and painting waterfalls covers moving water.

Forest and countryside

Autumn forest paths, spring meadows, lavender fields and winding country roads. Rich greens, warm golds and soft earth tones. Forest kits have the most small regions of any landscape, so they take longer: Heavenly Woods is a good second or third kit rather than a first. For the seasons, see autumn scenes and snowy landscapes.

Night skies

A landscape does not have to be painted in daylight. The northern lights guide explains how to make an aurora look like it moves over a dark ridge.

How to paint a landscape that has depth

  • Work back to front. Sky, then horizon, then middle ground, then foreground. Each plane overlaps the one behind it.
  • Keep the distance pale. Thin, clean coats on the far hills. The strongest colors belong to the foreground.
  • Save the highlights for last. Sun on water, snow on a ridge, light through leaves: smallest brush, least paint, final evening.
  • Pick a bigger size for big views. At 16 x 20 in a mountain range has room to breathe. A small canvas suits a single boat or a lone tree better.

Want your own view on the wall? Our custom kit service turns a travel photo into a numbered canvas, no experience needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest landscape to paint by numbers?

A scene with a clear horizon and big flat areas: a beach at sunset, a lake with a mountain behind it, a field under an open sky. Avoid dense forest as a first kit, because hundreds of small leaf regions in near-identical greens are where beginners lose patience.

In what order should I paint a landscape by numbers?

Back to front. Sky first, then the far mountains or horizon, then the middle ground, then the foreground and its details last. Each layer then overlaps the one behind it the way it does in real distance, and any slip on an edge is covered by the next plane.

Why does my landscape look flat?

Usually because the distant colors were painted too strong. The far hills on the canvas are numbered in paler, bluer tones than the near ones. Keep those regions thin and clean, and leave the darkest, most saturated colors for the foreground.

How many colors does a landscape kit need?

Most of our landscape kits come in 24, 36 or 48 colors. A simple beach or field reads well at 24. A mountain range with mist or a lake reflection looks better at 36 or 48, because the extra tones carry the gradient of the sky and the water.
