How to Seal and Protect Your Finished Paint by Numbers

How to Seal and Protect Your Finished Paint by Numbers

You spent 20+ hours creating your masterpiece — now protect it so it lasts decades. Sealing your finished paint by numbers with varnish prevents fading, dust damage, yellowing, and accidental scratches. Here is exactly how to do it.

At ArtistryByNumbers, our premium acrylic paints are durable — but varnishing takes them to museum-quality. Free Worldwide Shipping and Buy 2 Get 1 Free.

Varnish Options

Matte Varnish

Produces a smooth, non-reflective finish. Best for: paintings displayed in bright rooms where glare is an issue. Gives a sophisticated, fine-art look.

Gloss Varnish

Produces a shiny, reflective finish that intensifies colors and adds depth. Best for: vibrant paintings (tropical, floral, abstract) where you want colors to pop.

Satin Varnish

Middle ground between matte and gloss. Subtle sheen without heavy reflection. The most versatile choice if you are unsure.

Step-by-Step Varnishing

  1. Wait 24-48 hours after finishing your painting to ensure all paint is completely dry
  2. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth
  3. Work in a dust-free room — avoid areas with fans or open windows
  4. Use a wide, soft brush — a 2-inch flat brush works well
  5. Apply thin, even coats — brush in one direction (left to right or top to bottom)
  6. Do not overwork it — 2-3 thin coats are better than 1 thick coat
  7. Let each coat dry 2-4 hours before applying the next
  8. Final drying: wait 24 hours before hanging

Spray Varnish Alternative

Spray varnish is easier for beginners. Hold the can 12 inches from the canvas, spray in light, even passes. Apply 3-4 light coats rather than 1 heavy coat. Same drying times apply.

Do I NEED to Varnish?

No — our acrylic paints are durable without varnish. But varnishing adds: UV protection (prevents fading in sunlight), dust resistance, scratch protection, and enhanced color vibrancy. For paintings you plan to display long-term, varnishing is highly recommended.
