A canvas you painted yourself is the cheapest original art you will ever hang, and the only kind guests ask about. The trick is choosing it like a decorator would, for the room, rather than like a painter would, for the challenge. Here is the room-by-room version.
Living room
This is where the large sizes belong: 20x26 inches above a sofa, or a 23.5 inch square over a console. Pull one color from the room (the rug, a cushion, the curtains) and pick a design where that color appears in at least a quarter of the canvas. Stretch it on bars and leave it gallery-wrapped or add a thin black floater. Landscapes and abstracts are the easiest to live with daily; portraits can feel like someone is watching the TV with you.
Bedroom
Calm palettes, low contrast, soft subjects. Pastel skies, pale florals, misty water. Hang it above the headboard at 16x20 or as a pair of 12x16s on either side of the bed. Avoid anything with strong red or black; it reads as energy, which is not what a bedroom wall should say.
Kitchen and dining
Varnish is mandatory here, so the canvas wipes clean. Food still lifes, vineyards, Mediterranean streets and warm sunsets suit the space. A 12x12 square between cabinets and counter is a classic spot. See the kitchen and dining ideas for specific kits.
Bathroom
Humidity is the enemy of unvarnished acrylic on canvas. Two coats of satin varnish and a frame with a sealed back solve it. Seascapes, shells and water scenes are the obvious fit, and we keep a small bathroom shelf of designs that stay readable at 12x12.
Home office
Something you can stare at during a dull call. Cityscapes and abstract color fields work. Keep it at eye level when seated, which is lower than most people hang art. A 16x20 behind your chair also makes a decent video call background, which several remote-working customers mention.
Hallway and stairs
A series beats a single piece. Three or five 12x12 squares from the same collection, hung at equal spacing, create a gallery feel for under $100 with the buy two, get one free rule applied in the cart.
Finish and lighting
Matte varnish hides brush texture and suits bedrooms; satin brings colors up and suits living rooms; gloss shows every stroke, so skip it unless you want that. Light the canvas from above or the side, never straight on, or the acrylic will glare.
