Custom Paint By Numbers Kit

Send us a photo and we build a paint-by-numbers canvas around it. Your dog, the wedding shot, the house you grew up in. The kit ships with the numbered canvas, acrylics mixed to match the photo, and brushes. Most people finish theirs over two or three weekends.

Sizes and prices. The 12"x12" square starts at $19.95. Most people go for the 16"x20", which is $34.95 with 36 colors, or $24.95 if you keep it to 24 colors. Faces and pets come out better with more colors; a landscape is fine with fewer. Free worldwide shipping whichever you pick.

How your custom kit is made

1. Pick your size and how many colours you want.
2. Upload the photo here on this page — the kit will not go into the cart without a file. (If the image is enormous or the upload stalls, mail it to info@artistrybynumbers.com with your order number and we will take it from there.)
3. We open the file before anything is printed. Too small, too dark, wrong shape — we write back and ask for another one rather than send you a canvas you will not like.
4. We hand-trace it into a numbered canvas and match the paints, then ship it. You paint by the numbers at your own pace.

What makes a photo work

The canvas can only be as good as the file you send. A tracing turns your photo into 24 to 48 flat colours, so anything blurry, dim or heavily cropped shows up on the wall. Before you upload, check three things:

• Size. At least 1500 pixels on the shortest side, and 2500 for a 20"x26". Straight off a phone camera is perfect; a screenshot of a photo, or an image saved from Instagram or Facebook, usually is not.
• Light. Daylight or a bright room. Photos taken in a car, at night or under yellow indoor bulbs come out with a colour cast, and the tracing follows the cast rather than the real colour of the fur or the skin.
• Shape. A landscape photo on a portrait canvas has to lose a third of the picture. Match the orientation to the size you pick, and leave a little room around the subject.

One subject fills the canvas better than three. If you want a group or a face, take the 48-colour option — 24 colours is meant for landscapes and simple scenes.

We check every file before it goes to print. If yours is too small or too dark to do the job, we email you and ask for another one instead of sending you something disappointing. Nothing is printed until we are happy with the photo.

Not sure which size?

• 30x40 cm (12"x16") — a good first project. Finishes faster and slips into a standard frame.
• 40x50 cm (16"x20") — what most people choose. Room for detail without eating up every evening.
• 50x65 cm (20"x26") or the 60x60 cm jumbo square — for when you want a real statement piece on the wall.

On colours: 24 is fine for bold, simple images; step up to 36 or 48 for the shading that makes portraits and pets look lifelike.
