How to Paint Small Areas in Paint by Numbers Without Bleeding
Those tiny numbered sections can be the most frustrating — and the most satisfying — part of a paint by numbers kit. Painting small areas without bleeding into neighboring sections requires the right technique, the right brush, and a little patience. This guide makes it easy.

Essential Techniques
Use the Finest Brush
This is non-negotiable. If a section is smaller than your pinky fingernail, use your size 0 fine detail brush. Trying to paint small areas with a medium brush is the #1 cause of bleeding. Switch brushes. Always.
Minimal Paint Loading
Dip only the very tip of the brush — just 1-2mm — into the paint. Wipe excess on the edge of the pot. You want a thin, controlled amount on the brush. Too much paint flows out of control when it touches the canvas.
Steady Hand Technique
Brace your painting hand by resting the heel of your palm on the table (not on the canvas). This anchors your hand and reduces wobble. Some painters also brace their pinky finger on the canvas edge for extra stability.
No experience needed — these techniques work for everyone.
Advanced Precision Tips
- Use a magnifying glass — for sections under 3mm, a magnifier prevents squinting and mistakes
- Good lighting is critical — use a daylight lamp positioned to eliminate shadows on the canvas
- Paint neighboring sections AFTER the current one dries — wet sections next to each other will bleed
- Work from the center outward — place paint in the center of the section, then carefully push it toward the edges
- Use a toothpick for the smallest areas — dip the tip in paint and dot it precisely into micro-sections
What to Do If You Bleed
It will happen eventually. When it does:
- Do NOT try to wipe it while wet — it will smear
- Let the paint dry completely (10-15 minutes)
- Paint the correct color over the bleed area
- Acrylic paint is opaque — one coat covers most bleeding
