Small animals: get closer than feels natural
A rabbit, a guinea pig or a hamster sitting in the middle of a room photo ends up as a small brown shape. Crouch down and fill at least half of the frame with the animal. The face then has enough room for the eyes, the nose and the ears to get their own areas.
Birds have the same issue, plus feathers. A budgie or a parrot with bright plumage needs 36 colors or more, otherwise neighbouring greens and blues merge.
Horses
A whole horse in a field is a long thin subject on a large background, and most of the areas go to the grass and the sky. A head and neck portrait gives the generator far more to work with: the eye, the blaze, the mane. If you want the full horse, choose a large canvas and 48 colors.
A pet that is no longer here
Photos of a pet that has passed are often old ones: taken on an earlier phone, sent through a messaging app, or printed on paper. Before choosing, look for the original file in the gallery or in a cloud backup. For a paper print, photograph it flat, in daylight, from straight above, without glare on the gloss.
The generator tells you the size of the photo as soon as you choose it. Under 900 px on the long side, it is fine for a printout at home but too small for a canvas. For a kit, write to us before ordering if the only photo you have is a small one.
Two pets, or a pet and a person
Both faces need to be large in the frame and at the same distance from the camera. One sharp face next to a blurred one gives a painting with a single subject.

The PDF prints on Letter paper. The custom pet portrait kit comes on canvas, from 12"x12" to 23.5"x23.5", with 24, 36 or 48 colors, mixed acrylics and brushes. For cats and dogs, the dedicated pages go further: cat photos and dog photos.
